Mitsubishi’s All Wheel Control (AWC) System in Edmonton, AB
Mitsubishi’s All Wheel Control (AWC) system developed in 2001 for the Lancer Evolution revolutionized what was possible for performance vehicles in conditions that involved snow or ice. When designing this system the philosophy, as stated by Mitsubishi was “the AWC is a four-wheel dynamic control philosophy for maximally exploiting the capability of all four tires of a vehicle in a balanced manner to realize predictable handling and high marginal performance.”
This philosophy of exploiting what vehicles are typically capable of led to the massive success of the Lancer Evolution across North America as a performance vehicle that could be used year round. With improved handling capabilities in any conditions and a massive turbo charged engine being produced in such a nimble and quick car it was no wonder that this vehicle was quickly picked up by racing enthusiasts.
Many years later the Mitusbishi Lancer Evolution In Edmonton is still a force to be reckoned with in its class. With many improvements that have been made over the years it will remain a contender for many more years to come. One of the improvements which we will focus on today is the development of a new All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system that is now being named as one of the best four wheel drive systems in the world.
This system is known as Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) and is now made available on not only the 2014 Lancer Evolution, but also the more spacious and luxurious 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander in Edmonton. With a focus on their simple business strategy of providing driving pleasure with the highest level of durability and safety Mitsubishi has provided us with two excellent options for new vehicles in our less than ideal Alberta winters.
So what is Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control system?
S-AWC is the name of several unique technological upgrades united under one common badge. It was developed after years of experience in rally racing and vehicle manufacturing. The common goal being reliable handling and the best in performance Mitsubishi was able to achieve this by having the Active Center Differential (ACD), Active Yaw Control (AYC), Active Stability Control (ASC), and Sport ABS systems work together in a new and revolutionary manner.
When these components are combined an advanced control system allows you to select a different driving style based on your mood, current weather and road conditions, and a number of other conditions. With just the push of a button you are able to effortlessly shift your vehicles driving style to be better suited for Tarmac, Gravel, or Snow. Each with its own strengths one thing is guaranteed, with Mitsubishi’s S-AWC you will have a great time driving your new Mitsubishi Lancer or Outlander all year round.
This advanced integrated control system uses not only braking forces of all four wheels but moderation of the driving forces as well to ensure that the driver has complete response and control in a wide range of driving conditions. Because of S-AWC it is possible for any driver, old or new, to enjoy a high performance drive with a high level of security and satisfaction.
The components listed above that make up the S-AWC are fully functional and while Mitsubishi is currently satisfied with their S-AWC system there are still new components being added on prototype versions that are not available on production models yet. One of the functioning components, ACD, utilizes an electronically regulated multi-plate clutch. This system produces an ideal equilibrium between traction and steering response by finding the optimal front and rear wheel torque split based on driving conditions.
In addition the AYC uses a torque transfer instrument to limit yaw forces acting on the vehicle and help improve cornering at high speeds. By using braking controls to gain traction and shifting torque between the left and right side of the rear axle the system is able to ensure that the driver maintains control at all corners and speeds.
Enjoy a high performance
Lastly the system is made complete with the addition of a Sport ABS system. With a heavy reliance on monitoring and regulating brake controls the Sport ABS ensures that the Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi Outlander both perform exceptionally when entering corners at high speeds or starting on slippery surfaces.
As previously mentioned this is not the last of Mitsubishi’s ingenuities and advancements in driving performance. With prototypes already being developed the next generation of vehicles will soon be ready for the mass market. While you wait for these further advancements consider taking advantage of the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi Outlander and find out why the S-AWC is being named the best four wheel drive system in the world.
