Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year. The leaves have turned, if we’re lucky, it hasn’t snowed, and the weather is the perfect excuse to stay inside and watch scary movies. It’s one night of the year people get to dress up in whatever costume they’d like and let loose. We get to see our favorite characters from pop culture, fantasy, or lore brought to life. There’s just something about Halloween that personifies a playful energy that is contagious. It is something that the automotive industry, in my opinion, hasn’t fully taken advantage of. Come on, who doesn’t want to see a 2015 Evo Final Edition dressed up with a Dracula theme, or maybe a spooky 2017 Mirage rolling on by. There are plenty of spooky rides throughout the history of cinema, and Halloween is a great time to celebrate them.
With that, here are 5 cool Halloween-themed cars from movies:
Ecto-1 – Ghostbusters (1984)
First up is a classic from horror film history. This 1959 Cadillac is an iconic image from one of the biggest movies of the 80’s. The Ghostbusters movies are heavily tied to the Halloween holiday. They embody the fun and scares of the holiday in the perfect way.
1970 Chevy Nova – Death Proof (2007)
One of the more scary cars on this list, but that doesn’t detract from its overwhelming coolness; the 1970 Chevy Nova. It takes the classic American muscle car and somehow makes it even cooler. As well, let’s not forget one of the coolest actors of the 80’s, Kurt Russel as Stuntman Mike. Stuntman Mike is the type of cat that practically invented cool. And though it turns out that his coolness is a cover for a terrifying psychopath, you still want hang out with him; just don’t go home with him.
1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 – Evil Dead
This little indie horror movie was a staple for kids growing up in the 80’s, or people that grew up renting VHS tapes at their local video store. A cult classic that spawned 3 sequels and even a TV show. These movies helped propel director Sam Raimi to direct the movie Spiderman (2002), who still owns the car today. While the car doesn’t do anything fantastic or scary itself, it’s a trademark that belongs to the film franchise’s hero, Ash.
1967 Chevy Impala – Supernatural (2005 –)
Supernatural, a TV Show currently in its 12th season, has one of the biggest cult followings in modern television. While Dean’s Impala isn’t exactly the most unique of horror rides, it’s featured prominently throughout the series, and even has its own spooky and convoluted back story. This spook–mobile even gets its own episode!
The Mystery Machine – Scooby Doo (1969 –)
Easily the most iconic car in the entire scary stuff genre. You could argue that the Batmobile is the only car that’s more famous. What type of vehicle the Mystery Machine actually is has been something that’s been up for debate since the show’s conception. Some think the MM is an old model VW Bug, while the live action movie version used a 1980’s era Ford Econoline van. What is not up for debate is that the Mystery Machine is pure coolness. And we all wish we could ride along with the Scooby Gang and go on a variety of spooky adventures. Okay, now I’m craving Scooby Snacks.
