2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Overview

The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a new model, a compact crossover SUV that's big on style and value. This model delivers a competent engine and excellent steering, a winning combination in a competitive segment.

Four Trims for the Choosing

The Eclipse Cross introduces a new styling direction for the Mitsubishi and in this example it is entirely evident in the sharp fascia marked by a dynamic grille and a coupe-like layout. Four trims are available: ES, LE, SE and SEL.

Mitsubishi's latest model seats five and is most comfortable for four adults. The driver's seat is available with power adjustment; the rear seat offers a 60/40 split fold-down layout. With the rear seat folded, you'll find one of the largest cargo compartments in this segment, ideal for hauling home those yard sale finds. Mitsubishi supplies a compact temporary spare tire.

Tech Features and Upgrades

The crossover's dashboard offers a clean layout with an orderly centre console topped by a seven-inch, high-resolution display screen. Importantly, this model supplies Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, something some luxury brands don't offer. You'll also find a touchpad controller on the lower console.

Standard features include halogen headlights, LED running lights, fog lights, a roof spoiler and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, you'll find full power accessories, a tilt and telescopic steering column, automatic climate control, cruise control and adjustable front seats. Top tech items include a seven-inch colour display, four speakers, HD Radio, Bluetooth wireless technology,

Move up through the trim levels and you'll find keyless entry with push-button start, improved cloth seats, leather surfaces, an electronic parking brake, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated rear seats and a premium Rockford Fosgate audio system. An available dual-pane sunroof is especially desirable, giving the Eclipse Cross a more airy environment whether the roof is opened or closed.

Mitsubishi's First Turbo Engine

Under the hood is a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine, the first boosted motor of its kind from Mitsubishi. This engine has an output of 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and comes paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available.

This model's strong suit is found in its drive, offering stout steering and engaging handling. Not only is this model a champ on the straightaways, but it carves up corners with only minimal body lean. Firm braking brings this crossover to a certain stop.

Available Safety Technologies

Every Mitsubishi comes with a suite of standard safety features. You'll also find optional driver-assist items, including lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, and a head-up display in full colour. All models have a standard rearview camera; a multi-view camera system is optional.
